It is an explanation — an attempt to give you a clear mental picture of how regenerative medicine works, so that you can ask better questions, hold realistic expectations, and make decisions about your own health with confidence rather than confusion. For most of medical history, we treated the human body like a machine. When a part wore out, we tried to replace it or manage its decline. We set broken bones, removed diseased organs, and prescribed drugs to control symptoms. This approach has saved countless lives, and nothing in this book is meant to diminish it. But it carries a hidden assumption: that the body is essentially a collection of parts, and that healing means fixing or swapping those parts. A quiet revolution in cell biology has revealed something far more remarkable. The body is not a machine. It is a vast communication network. Trillions of cells are in constant conversation with one another, sending and receiving signals every second, coordinating growth, repair, defense, and renewal. And much of what we call disease and aging is, at its heart, a breakdown in that communication. The machine model is a useful simplification, but cells are constantly signaling and responding to one another. Much of healing is that conversation working well, and much of disease is it breaking down.
Because if healing is largely about signaling, then the value of a therapy lies in the instructions it delivers — not in physically replacing tissue.
