VO₂ Max Testing

What Is VO₂ Max?

VO₂ max represents the maximum amount of oxygen your body can utilize during exercise and is widely considered one of the most important measures of cardiorespiratory fitness. While traditional health assessments often focus on laboratory values, blood pressure and body composition, VO₂ max provides something different: an objective measurement of how effectively your heart, lungs, circulation and muscles work together during physical activity.

Whether the goal is improving cardiovascular fitness, maintaining physical function with age or optimizing performance, VO₂ Max Testing provides a meaningful baseline and a number you can work to improve.

VO₂ Max Testing

How the Test Works

During VO₂ Max Testing, you wear a respiratory mask while exercising on a treadmill or stationary bike. Exercise intensity gradually increases while the system continuously measures your breathing, ventilation and oxygen consumption. The test determines your VO₂ max, expressed as milliliters of oxygen used per kilogram of body weight per minute (mL/kg/min), providing an objective measurement of your aerobic capacity.

Why VO₂ Max Matters

Cardiorespiratory fitness is strongly associated with long-term health, physical function and longevity. Large population studies have consistently found that higher cardiorespiratory fitness is associated with lower risks of cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality. Importantly, VO₂ max is modifiable. Aerobic capacity can improve with appropriately designed exercise and conditioning, making VO₂ Max Testing useful both for establishing a baseline and objectively measuring progress over time.

More Than a Fitness Test

VO₂ Max Testing can also provide valuable information about exercise physiology, including ventilation, breathing patterns, heart-rate response when paired with a heart-rate monitor, and individualized training zones. This information can help create a more personalized approach to cardiovascular conditioning rather than relying solely on generalized age-based exercise recommendations.
